The CU8871-0000 is a USB-to-EtherCAT junction module produced by Beckhoff and included in the CU EtherCAT Junctions series. This compact component links a single USB Type-B host port to an EtherCAT segment, allowing a PC to reach diagnostic, analysis, or extension nodes without opening the control cabinet, installing a separate network card, or disturbing the existing machine wiring. In an automation environment, the device acts as a protocol bridge and draws its logic supply directly from the connected USB port, which makes it useful for laptop-based service access, test benches, and compact installations where an external power adapter would add unnecessary cabling.
The junction is powered exclusively through the USB interface at 5 V DC and can accept up to 500 mA during peak enumeration, yet its continuous consumption stays low during normal communication with connected EtherCAT devices. Access operations never exceed 100 mW, background communication is listed at 5 mW, and quiescent operation is listed at 10 mW, which helps limit heat buildup inside densely packed I/O racks, small control boxes, and other enclosed mounting spaces. The housing carries an IP20 protection class suitable for cabinet interiors, and immunity to conducted bursts and electrostatic discharge is rated to EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4 for reliable use near drives, switched power supplies, and other electrically noisy industrial equipment.
The plastic enclosure snaps onto a 35 mm rail in accordance with EN 50022 and can be mounted in any installation position without derating, which gives flexibility when space is limited around adjacent terminals, couplers, or power supplies. Device status is indicated by 3 LEDs on the front panel, and the single USB Type-B connector supports USB 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 signaling with cable lengths up to 3 m and negotiated data rates up to 5 Gbit/s when a SuperSpeed host is present. Mechanical durability under factory vibration and shock complies with EN 60068-2-6 and EN 60068-2-27, supporting reliable operation when the junction is installed on machinery, mobile subassemblies, or other equipment subject to movement.
