The CU2508-0000 is an EtherCAT junction manufactured by Beckhoff within the CU EtherCAT Junctions series. In an automation cabinet it serves as a passive branching node that allows star or tree topologies while maintaining the deterministic timing of the EtherCAT fieldbus. By collecting eight 100 Mbit branches and one gigabit upstream line, the device simplifies network layout and reduces cable runs in distributed I/O or drive systems. This layout is useful where several nearby EtherCAT devices need separate cable paths from one cabinet location.
Internal electronics are supplied with a nominal voltage of 24 VDC and draw only 250 mA from the control cabinet supply, delivered through a 3-pin (+, –, PE) power connector. Four diagnostic LEDs give quick feedback on link activity, error states, and power, so no external tester is needed for basic troubleshooting. All network terminations are standard RJ45 sockets, protected to IP20 and intended for cabinet-mounted use. The housing clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and the installation position is variable, allowing horizontal or vertical orientation to match cabinet space. In TwinCAT 2 starting at release 2.11R2 (Build 2028), the junction appears automatically in the system manager when scanned.
The eight branch ports operate at 8x100BASE-TX + 1x1000BASE-T, enabling mixed-bandwidth networks where a gigabit uplink feeds multiple 100 Mbit segments without saturating the controller interface. Each segment can extend up to 100 m when the wiring uses CAT5 Shielded Twisted Pair cable, matching common industrial Ethernet cable trays. The electronics tolerate a relative humidity of up to 95% without condensation, so the unit remains functional in humid factory zones provided the enclosure is kept closed. This arrangement helps separate local network runs for I/O stations, servo drives, or machine modules without requiring a separate switch at every branch point.
