The surface uses resistive touch technology, so data entry is possible with fingers or while wearing gloves. Control logic runs on an Intel IXP420 XScale processor, and this 32-bit ARM core balances response speed with modest heat dissipation. Application code and the operating system reside in 32 MB of onboard flash, while runtime variables are buffered in 128 MB of SDRAM for small PLC programs and local data logging.
