Beckhoff builds the C3640-0040 industrial computer as part of its C3 Panel PC Units series. The unit integrates a touchscreen and embedded controller in one housing, letting machine builders combine HMI visualization and PLC tasks without separate hardware. Supplied as a front-mounting panel device, it fits directly into an electrical cabinet door or machine frame, providing centralized operator access while the embedded PC executes real-time automation software. With this arrangement, the Panel PC supervises motion sequences, collects field data, and displays process status in a single assembly.

The front panel carries a 15 in active matrix screen that reproduces graphics at 1024 x 768 pixels; this XGA resolution allows clear rendering of SCADA pages and detailed alarm dialogs. Because the display uses TFT technology, image refresh is fast and color stability remains consistent across viewing angles, which is important on production lines where operators may stand to the side. A sealed aluminum bezel rated at IP65 shields the screen and function keys from dust and low-pressure water jets, so the face can be washed down without additional enclosures. Network integration is handled through an RJ-45 connector that supports standard Ethernet cabling, and seven internal PCI or PCIe expansion slots provide room for fieldbus, motion, or vision interfaces.

At the rear, protection drops to IP20 because service access is required, exposing the two serial channels that follow the RS-232 standard for legacy drives or barcode readers. Four USB receptacles provide high-speed links for removable media and other peripherals, so external USB hubs are usually unnecessary.
