The C1220.000 is a fiber-optic fieldbus interface card produced by Beckhoff for the C1 Interface Cards series. Installed in an ISA slot, the board functions as the Lightbus master so an industrial PC can exchange deterministic I/O data with distributed drives, valves, and sensing modules. Two independent communication channels allow one controller to supervise separate optical rings without extra hardware.
The card transfers serial data across the fiber at a rate of 2.5 MBaud, meeting Lightbus timing needs for cyclic traffic. Each telegram can carry a payload of 255 bytes, giving room for I/O images and diagnostics. A 4 kB dual-port RAM decouples the ISA bus from network timing by providing shared memory to the host CPU. During operation the electronics draw 800 mA from the backplane rail, and the circuit is designed to run only on the standard PC supply of 5 VDC. These values represent the electrical and buffer resources that must be considered when sizing the host system.
A dedicated Siemens SAB 80C166-S microcontroller executes the protocol state machine, enabling deterministic processing of up to 32 bits per 25 µs for each logical ring. An optical ring can contain as many as 254 stations, and eight logical rings are multiplexed over the card’s physical interfaces to increase network segmentation. The printed-circuit assembly measures 161 × 107 mm, so it fits behind a full-height ISA bracket while leaving airflow for adjacent slots. Two ST fiber connectors route transmit and receive paths, and their ring-oriented wiring supports automatic fault localization in the physical ring topology. With a fiber-optic medium that is immune to electromagnetic interference, the C1220.000 maintains signal integrity in cabinets close to inverters or welders.
