The BC9000 is an Ethernet-based bus terminal controller from Beckhoff that belongs to the BC Bus Terminals series. It combines a compact PLC with a fieldbus interface so distributed digital and analog I/O slices can be addressed over standard TCP/IP networks in industrial automation. By embedding a runtime for TwinCAT 2 within the terminal block, the device removes the need for a separate rack-mounted controller and delivers deterministic I/O processing directly on the machine.
The controller has one Ethernet port, and communication is organized in a star topology to simplify switch deployment and cable fault isolation. Cyclic data exchange moves through the dedicated Process Data Port 300, while configuration login is isolated on the Access Control Port 10000 to segregate credentials from the process channel. A hardware and software watchdog timeout of 1000 ms places the outputs in a fail-safe state if packets stop. For peer routing, the internal AMS table stores 10 entries, and each update message is delimited by an ADS header whose length is set by the AMS Entry Size parameter. The device also opens Diagnostic Local Image Port 800 and low-level Register Port 100 so service software can capture real-time states without interrupting PLC execution.
Nonvolatile variables are preserved across power cycles with up to 2048 bytes of retain data, and real-time application states are mirrored in 4096 flag bytes that the runtime updates during every task scan. Each ADS telegram is limited to 20 bytes per AMS entry, keeping buffer usage predictable for deterministic scheduling. Idle TCP sockets are cleared after 10 seconds to conserve the connection table on congested plant networks. Firmware images transfer through port 800, while register snapshots use port 100, allowing maintenance operations to proceed in parallel with I/O polling. These separate communication paths prevent diagnostic and register traffic from interfering with the primary process-data channel during normal controller operation.
