The Beckhoff BC8150 is part of the BC Bus Terminals series and features a 16-bit micro-controller with 48 Kbyte of program memory and 32 Kbyte of data memory. The BC8150 is a compact programmable fieldbus controller produced by Beckhoff for the BC Bus Terminals series. Acting as the head of a modular terminal string, it integrates a 16-bit microcontroller and local memory so that digital and analog process signals can be processed at the machine before communication with a higher-level system occurs. In distributed automation, the unit can replace centrally wired I/O panels with a small, rail-mounted node that executes PLC logic and forwards data through a serial link. This arrangement reduces the amount of signal wiring routed directly to the central control cabinet and allows local logic to operate near the connected equipment.
Its onboard resources support sizable application programs. The controller offers 32 KB of data memory for variable storage and 48 KB of program memory for compiled IEC 61131-3 code, allowing multitask execution without external storage. Field signals enter through the terminal row and are mapped to a PLC process image with 2,048 input bytes and 2,048 output bytes, matching the K-bus bandwidth to the microcontroller. Within that process image, the system can scan up to 1,024 analog inputs and outputs and 2,040 digital inputs and outputs, so one head station can accommodate the signals of a medium-sized machine line. The controller cycles through this process image during operation, enabling predictable response times for motion and sequence logic.
The upstream bus connects through a 9-pin D-Sub connector, while local service access is available through COM1 as an RS-232 port configured for peer-to-peer communication over segments up to 15 m. K-bus expansion modules can draw up to 1,750 mA from the head station, so the selected power supply must support this internal load. The power contacts carry up to 10 A at a maximum of 24 VDC to energize the field terminals. The internal circuitry provides a dielectric strength of 500 V, helping it withstand electrical transients. An IP20 housing protects the electronics against accidental contact but requires installation inside a control cabinet. Adequate cabinet airflow must be provided to remove operating heat from the controller and its connected terminals.
