The BC8100 is an embedded controller produced by Beckhoff as part of the BC Bus Terminals series. It operates as a compact PLC and fieldbus coupler, enabling a stack of modular I/O terminals to be driven locally while forwarding data to higher-level networks. By combining logic execution with direct signal acquisition at the panel, the unit reduces cabinet space and cable runs in distributed industrial automation layouts such as material handling lines, packaging machines, and building services equipment.
It is powered from a 24 V supply that also energizes the downstream terminals through the integrated power contacts at 24 V DC/AC. The controller can treat up to 128 inputs and outputs of analog data and 256 inputs and outputs of digital data, all mapped into a process image of 512 bytes in / 512 bytes out. Within that image the default PLC I/O length occupies 16 bytes, and user programs may reference addresses up to the maximum PLC variable index of 511. A stack of up to 64 bus terminals can be attached, physically locked to the BC8100 via a 1 × D-sub 9-pin connector on the front panel. For non-volatile process information, 512 bytes of remanent flags are available.
The K-bus distributes output current of 1750 mA, while the separate power contacts can deliver 10 A to high-load field devices. Serial diagnostics and parameterization are provided through an interface that defaults to 19.2 kbaud and uses the 8E1 frame format, allowing rapid commissioning from a PC or handheld terminal. During operation the controller itself draws a maximum of 500 mA from the incoming 24 V line, leaving sufficient margin for attached electronics. An IP20 protection class housing permits installation inside standard control enclosures where finger-safe wiring is required, completing a compact node that supports decentralized logic without additional gateways.
