Internal Product Review

The AX5103-0000 is a Beckhoff digital servo drive designed for precise motion control, with 3 A nominal output current and 7.5 A peak output current. IP20 protection and 18 kA SCCR give the drive strong suitability for controlled cabinet installations. A maximum external braking power of 15 kW makes the AX5103-0000 an excellent choice for dynamic servo applications.

Product Description:

The AX5103-0000 is a digital servo drive produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the AX Digital Servo Drives series. The unit interfaces between a motion controller and three-phase servo motors, delivering regulated current and voltage so axes follow commanded position, velocity, and torque profiles. Within an automation cabinet it supports distributed EtherCAT systems, allowing coordinated motion in packaging machines, material-handling equipment, and general factory cells.

At 92 mm wide, 317.70 mm high, and 232 mm deep without connectors, the drive fits standard 300 mm cabinet frames. The internal DC bus is stabilized by a 235 µF link capacitor and may rise to a maximum of 875 VDC when the connected motor regenerates energy. Continuous axis demand is handled by a rated output of 3 A, while instantaneous load peaks are supplied at 7.5 A; the current loop can be adjusted in steps as small as 1 A. Heat generated by the power stage amounts to 50 W of power loss, so forced-air ventilation is generally sufficient. A front housing classified at IP20 permits installation inside a finger-safe enclosure.

For deceleration energy the brake chopper can absorb 50 W continuously, and when an external resistor of at least 47 Ω is connected it can divert up to 15 kW without over-voltage trips. Apparent power drawn from the supply is 1.2 kVA on 230 VAC lines and 2.1 kVA on 400 VAC networks, information used when selecting upstream protection equipment. The power section carries a short-circuit current rating of 18 kA, allowing placement in high-capacity panels fed by large transformers. Together with the 18 kA rating, the service factor and dimensional envelope help calculate cabinet heat rise and conduit fill, while the slender module profile simplifies stacking multiple AX Digital Servo Drives in multi-axis machines.
