The AX2090-B200 bus communication module is produced by Beckhoff for the AX Digital Servo Drives series. Mounted on an AX drive, it provides the physical and protocol layer needed to integrate the drive into distributed control networks. By acting as a dedicated fieldbus node, the module allows the motion controller to exchange deterministic process data with the servo axis, aligning the drive’s torque and velocity loops with broader industrial automation tasks. This arrangement lets the drive remain synchronized with other networked axes and peripheral devices during coordinated machine operation.
Real-time exchange is driven by a 32-bit transfer time of 25 µs, so position or torque commands reach the drive within one control cycle of the central PLC. The optical channel delivers a sustained throughput of 2.5 Mbit/s, and each of the eight communication channels uses a dual-ported RAM segment sized at 4 kB. This shared memory allows asynchronous read-write access by the drive and the fieldbus master. Motion data use a 16-bit internal position resolution that matches the servo encoder feedback length. The dedicated Lightbus protocol carries user data together with a telegram format that includes one start bit, six CRC bits, and two stop bits. The module also exposes a 2-byte PLC interface for cyclic control words, while parameter settings are handled through an onboard serial COM connector used for local service access.
Up to 254 remote I/O modules can be addressed from the same master ring, letting a single drive share its bus segment with sensors and actuators. Transmission occurs over optical fiber, and the physical wiring must be closed in a ring topology so the controller can build redundant polling paths across the eight logical rings used by the interface. Each cyclic user telegram carries 32-bit application data, which keeps processing overhead low for time-critical loops. The variable I/O option becomes active with drive firmware revision B5 or higher, enabling expanded signal handling on the bus segment.
