The X20CP1586 controller is produced by B&R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It executes IEC logic, exchanges fieldbus data, and distributes low-voltage power to adjacent slices, forming the core of compact machine controllers. The module latches onto X20 backplanes and links motion, safety, and HMI devices through the manufacturer’s X2X real-time bus. This arrangement allows local and distributed functions to be handled from the same control platform.
At the heart of the unit is an Intel Atom E680T running at a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz, which supports fast deterministic task execution. The CPU is supported by 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM, a separate 512 kB L2 cache, and 1 MB of non-volatile SRAM that retains user variables during power loss. The shortest task cycle can be configured down to 100 µs, while a typical single instruction completes in only 0.0027 µs, so motion and process loops can be closed tightly. A single CompactFlash slot stores the operating system and application files, and one modular interface slot accommodates add-on fieldbus cards. Serial diagnostics can travel up to 900 m over the RS-232 channel, and the USB port can source 0.5 A for local service tools.
The controller draws a maximum input current of 1.5 A from its supply and dissipates a total of 9.7 W during typical operation; 7 W of that is available as X2X output power for the attached slice electronics. Field wiring is protected to IP20, which meets cabinet installation requirements. Output sensor power is provided at 24 VDC, eliminating separate supplies on smaller islands. Overall peripheral energy is limited by the USB source current of 0.5 A and the bus allocation rules enforced by the single interface slot. That power arrangement lets the controller feed attached slice electronics without a separate local distribution module in smaller assemblies.
