The X20CP1583 is a central processing unit module built by B & R Automation for the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. Installed on the series backplane, it executes IEC 61131-3 logic, exchanges process data with distributed I/O, and forwards diagnostic information to supervisory systems over industrial networks. By combining computing resources, fieldbus masters, and local switching capability in one housing, it serves as the control focus for compact machines and cell-level automation. This arrangement allows one module to coordinate machine sequences, monitor status, and handle communication tasks without requiring a separate standalone controller.
Its computing core is an Atom E620T that operates at a clock frequency of 333 MHz. Working memory includes 128 MB DDR2 SDRAM, while retentive variables are stored in a dedicated 1 MB SRAM. Standard Ethernet traffic is handled at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, and real-time POWERLINK messages are isolated on a separate channel that sustains 100 Mbit/s. Separating general network traffic from cyclic control traffic helps preserve predictable communication during machine operation. One interface slot on the front panel accepts an expansion card when additional fieldbus or memory options are required, and the relay path can carry up to 10 A for auxiliary contactors or solenoid loads without external amplifiers.
The controller’s internal logic draws 8.2 W when no USB devices are connected, while an X2X backplane feed supplies 7 W to downstream modules and the USB port can source 0.5 A for service tools. Digital outputs present a nominal level of 24 VDC, and the RS-232 maintenance link communicates at 115.2 kbit/s. The housing measures 150 mm wide, 99 mm high, and 85 mm deep, allowing adequate airflow for conduction cooling in a cabinet. The compact enclosure lets the CPU sit beside other X20 modules while keeping wiring runs short and access to the service port straightforward.
