The X20CP1485-1 controller is supplied by B&R Automation within the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series. It serves as the central CPU slice that coordinates distributed I/O, motion, and safety nodes over the vendor’s proprietary backplane, giving machine builders a single point for deterministic program execution and network traffic management. Housed in a DIN-rail format, the device integrates computing logic, fieldbus interfacing, and local power routing for compact machine-level control. Because the CPU, communication, and local power routing are combined in one slice, the station can be assembled as a compact control node on a single rail.
Base power consumption is 10.5 W, so the supply can be sized with minimal overhead. An instruction cycle time of 0.0055 µs enables extremely fine-grained PLC steps, while a shortest task cycle of 400 µs permits high-frequency closed-loop control without jitter. The CPU accesses 64 MB SDRAM for code and data, and an additional 1 MB SRAM preserves retentive variables during power loss. High-speed plant communication is handled through an integrated POWERLINK port operating at 100 Mbit/s. One modular interface slot accepts optional fieldbus or motion cards, and the single CompactFlash slot offers removable, nonvolatile media for application files or recipe storage. That removable media can also hold application data that should remain available independently of working memory. Serial diagnostics run over RS-232 at up to 115.2 kbit/s, allowing connection of handheld terminals or modems.
The controller draws a maximum of 2.2 A from the primary 24 V rail and can source up to 7 W of X2X bus power to downstream slices, while its field wiring terminals deliver logic signals at 24 VDC. Processing duties are handled by an Intel Celeron 400, which matches the fast task timing with adequate arithmetic throughput for local control routines. Cabinet planning is simplified by the 150 mm width, 85 mm depth, and 99 mm height, allowing the unit to fit alongside other X20 modules without special spacers. The overall form factor is suitable for control sections where space is limited but several X20 slices must be installed side by side.
