B & R Automation’s X20CP0484-1 belongs to the X20 Fieldbus Input Output Modules series and serves as the central CPU slice for modular control systems. Installed beside digital and analog I/O terminals, the module executes user logic, manages deterministic communication, and exchanges process data with higher-level networks. This arrangement makes it suitable for compact machine controllers and distributed motion platforms where local control and networked data exchange must occur in the same station. Because the CPU is integrated into the X20 slice format, it can sit directly in the I/O stack and reduce the space normally required for a separate controller.
The onboard processor runs at 667 MHz and is based on an ARM Cortex-A9 core, providing a minimum instruction time of 0.0106 µs. Program variables reside in 512 MB DDR3 SDRAM, while application files are stored in a 2 GB eMMC flash memory. This split between working memory and flash storage supports fast execution while keeping the control application resident after shutdown. Nonvolatile process variables can be written to the 64 kB FRAM so they survive power cycles without wear. The controller supports a shortest cyclic task of 0.4 ms, allowing high-frequency regulation loops. A 0.2 A USB host port is available for service tools or removable media, and the design remains fanless during normal operation.
For deterministic fieldbus exchange, the built-in POWERLINK interface operates at 100 Mbit/s. Typical system demand is limited to 2.97 W, reducing cabinet heat when several CPUs are mounted side by side. The plastic housing carries an IP20 rating and is intended for installation inside a control cabinet. Flash technology supports 40 TB of cumulative writes, 20,000 program download cycles, and data retention for 10 years. In multi-module stations, the low internal heat output helps preserve spacing flexibility when power supplies, network couplers, and I/O slices are mounted closely together. Cooling fins on the enclosure dissipate heat without fans, and writable FRAM preserves critical counters between stops while the low power budget lets the module share 24 Vdc supplies with I/O slices without special wiring.
