The 3UM161.6 is an I/O expansion module produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Designed to mount next to a CPU unit on the backplane, it gathers mixed analog and digital signals from field devices and makes them available to the controller task. By combining voltage-based measurement channels, high-speed counters, and low-power transistor outputs in one housing, the unit streamlines signal interfacing in automated machinery.
Among its measurement resources, the module offers four differential analog inputs that accept ±10 V process signals. Each input has an 8 kHz cutoff frequency, limiting aliasing when fast transients are present. The ±4.5 mV maximum offset error prevents drift at zero from masking process changes. Conversion takes place at a native 14-bit resolution, providing 16,384 discrete steps across the span for precise scaling by the application program. The ±10 V range is also available at the auxiliary potentiometer supply, allowing external dividers to be referenced to the module voltage. The module has three analog outputs that use 12-bit conversion and can drive ±10 V proportional valves or speed references. A dedicated counter input handles encoder or pulse transducer signals at frequencies up to 10 kHz, enabling rate calculations without added hardware.
On the discrete side, the unit carries 16 sink-type digital inputs that support 24 VDC operation, allowing proximity switches and sensors to be wired directly. Two digital outputs share the terminal block; channel one sources 10 mA for indicator lamps, while channel two is a high-side switch rated at 2 A for coil loads such as relays. Total internal power demand remains within 6 W, so the module can operate from the standard System 2005 backplane without additional cooling.
