The 3PS691.90-1 power module belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series from B&R Automation. Designed as a remote I/O supply and monitoring element, it converts incoming mains energy for the backplane bus while providing relay signaling that indicates controller readiness. In distributed automation cabinets, the unit supplies logic voltage to CPU and expansion cards and allows the host PLC to address additional field terminals through its remote I/O slave capability.
The electrical input of the module spans from 92 VAC to 133 VAC, with a nominal operating point of 120 VAC. Protection at the line side is managed by a 1.6 A, 250 V slow-blow fuse; the slower melting characteristic lets short inrush currents pass without nuisance trips while still interrupting sustained overloads. A half-peak duration under 10 msec limits how long the internal capacitors can tolerate surge voltages before clamping begins. During normal operation, the converter draws a maximum current of 0.8 A and delivers up to 45 W to the DIN-rail system, powering CPU logic, local sensors, and the 12 V RAM buffer that preserves volatile data whenever mains power is lost.
Mechanical integration follows a double-width carrier, so the module occupies two adjacent slots inside the System 2005 rack. Output status and fault conditions are indicated by front-panel LEDs, and the device appears to the central processor as a remote I/O slave, eliminating separate wiring for readiness feedback. An internal normally open ready relay is rated for 3 A and can switch up to 270 VAC / 30 VDC, providing a dry contact for power-on sequencing. Surge resilience is increased by an overvoltage tolerance of <500 V at the input and by internal 780 V VDR suppression across the relay coil, limiting stress on downstream electronics.
