Internal Product Review

The 3PS477.9 is a B & R Automation System 2005 controller power supply rated for 24 VDC nominal input and 58.5 W total output power. Separate 24 V and 5 V rails with 50 W and 40 W capacity support stable control architectures and clean logic distribution. Expansion slave support and a normally open ready relay make the unit a strong fit for modular automation panels.

Product Description:

The 3PS477.9 power module is produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed on the left side of a CPU, it receives 24 VDC bulk power from a cabinet source and converts it into stabilized 5 V and 24 V rails for logic circuits, sensors, and actuators. By integrating power conversion, monitoring, and relay signaling into a single unit, the device simplifies power management within distributed industrial automation nodes. Its location beside the CPU also allows it to distribute power directly through the controller assembly without requiring separate local converters.

The input section accepts a nominal voltage of 24 VDC and remains operational from 18 VDC to 30 VDC, so brownouts or moderate overvoltage do not interrupt the controller. A 500 µF input capacitor filters line ripple before conversion. Primary protection is provided by a 6.3 A time-lag, 250 V fuse that tolerates inrush current while interrupting sustained faults. Under normal load, the converter can supply a combined output of 58.5 W. The internal ready relay is normally open and closes when the regulated rails reach their permitted tolerances. Its contact supports status wiring at up to 30 VDC, while a 370 V transient diode clamps the relay circuit to ground and protects downstream electronics from inductive voltage spikes.

The maximum current drawn from the upstream supply is 3.5 A, which must be considered when sizing cabinet wiring. Separate channels deliver up to 50 W at 24 V for field loads and 40 W at 5 V for logic circuits, with each channel monitored for overload. Energy reserve during outages is provided by 10,000 µF of single-phase backup capacitance and 6,000 µF of three-phase backup capacitance, allowing the CPU to save data before shutdown. The module can act as an expansion slave, passing bus power and signals to additional bases without requiring extra cabling. A ready contact rated at 3 A provides the handshake signal to higher-level safety relays. This contact allows external control equipment to monitor the availability of the module’s regulated output rails.
