The 3NW150.60-1 is a communication interface module produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It equips a controller rack with an external fieldbus link so distributed I/O and higher-level PLCs can exchange data over a single serial channel. By handling the physical and data-link layers internally, the unit reduces low-level handshaking work for the controller CPU and allows machine networks to expand without standalone gateways. This arrangement supports centralized control while keeping remote devices connected through the same network path.
Communication is executed over an RS485 interface and wired through a 9-pin D-Sub socket, a combination used with the cabling common to PROFIBUS installations. The module supports five selectable transmission rates of 9.6/19.2/93.75/187.5/500 kbit/s, so bus speed can be matched to application timing requirements. Up to 127 stations with a repeater can share the segment, and bus access follows a token-passing master/slave procedure for deterministic communication. A galvanically isolated supply provides 5 V / 200 mA for external transceivers or terminating resistors. The required transfer medium is shielded twisted pair cabling arranged in a physical bus topology.
Installation parameters are configured on the front panel. Two address switches set the node number, while a single baud-rate switch selects a preset speed, so no separate software utility is needed for basic setup. Direct bus connection removes the need for an intermediate coupler between the rack and the network. Even with continuous bus activity, the unit draws only a maximum of 7 W from the backplane supply. The housing occupies a single-width slot, which helps conserve rail space in compact cabinets. Compliance with DIN 19245 Parts 1 and 2 FMS supports interoperability across vendors, and the settings made by the 2 rotary address switches remain valid after power loss.
