The 3IP161.60-1 module is a central processing and I/O unit produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed in a compact rack, it coordinates machine sequences by executing the user program. It directly manages on-board analog and digital channels, making it suited for mid-sized industrial automation cells that need both fast logic and precise signal conditioning.
The controller samples six analog inputs across a span of ±10 V. Each conversion has 14-bit resolution, allowing the CPU to detect millivolt-level changes useful in closed-loop tension or pressure regulation. Twelve digital inputs are accepted, and edge changes can be captured up to 200 kHz, so high-speed encoders or flow meters can be monitored without pulse loss. Program execution is paced by an instruction cycle of 0.4 µs, which shortens response latency between an input event and the corresponding actuator command. Networked motion or sensor clusters can be linked over the integrated CAN interface that streams process data at up to 500 kBit/s, eliminating the need for separate fieldbus cards and simplifying panel wiring.
Complementing the acquisition side, the board drives six analog outputs, each delivering a ±10 V control signal with 12-bit resolution for smooth valve or inverter references. Twelve digital outputs can handle up to ±100 mA apiece, enabling direct actuation of relays or indicator lamps without interposing isolation modules. Serial diagnostics or barcode reader input is possible through the RS-232 port, which reaches 115.2 kBaud. With a total draw of 18 W, the card fits comfortably in passively cooled cabinets. Application code resides in a 1.5 MB FlashPROM, while 850 KB of battery-backed SRAM retains variables to support rapid restart after a power cycle.
