B & R Automation manufactures the 3IF797.9 communication card within its System 2005 Controllers series. The board plugs into the backplane of a controller to extend fieldbus and serial connectivity, enabling the host CPU to link with peripheral drives, remote I/O, and higher-level networks in automated production lines. By integrating CAN, X2X, and RS-232 interfaces in one compact assembly, the module simplifies signal routing and frees slot space that would otherwise be used for multiple separate interface cards.
The module conforms to the aPCI form factor, so it occupies a single mezzanine slot and draws only 0.68 W from the 3.3 V rail and 1.28 W from the 5 V rail. Those low power demands are important for chassis that share limited capacity across many cards. One CAN channel is provided, and messages are queued in a transmit-and-receive object buffer while passing through galvanic isolation shared with the X2X link to protect upstream electronics. Physical wiring is handled by a 4-pin multipoint connector, and arbitration remains stable at speeds up to 500 kBit/s. The card’s buffer architecture allows deterministic tasks to run without constant processor intervention while the dedicated CAN controller manages traffic.
For serial tasks, the board supplies one RS-232 port through a 9-pin D-Sub connector. The line is not isolated, yet it reaches 115.2 kBit/s, which suits maintenance terminals or barcode readers. An additional master interface supports one X2X link node, letting the controller synchronize remote modules over the proprietary real-time bus. The combined draw of 1.96 W stays within backplane thermal limits, and the card is suitable for cabinets with IP20 protection. Because the target platform is Flex IQ, the host system recognizes the card automatically and exposes the single CAN channel, the single RS-232 channel, and the single X2X master interface for configuration without manual I/O mapping.
