The 3IF792.9 is a communication interface module from B & R Automation that belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series. Mounted on the controller backplane, it extends the CPU with serial and X2X fieldbus channels. This lets the PLC exchange data with distributed I/O stations, operator panels, and diagnostic tools inside an industrial cell.
Data traffic on the module is shown through its LED status indicators, allowing users to verify activity at a glance. The housing carries an ingress protection rating of IP20, so it must be installed inside a cabinet. A single serial channel is provided through the If1 connector, which uses a 9-pin male DSUB, and the signal level follows the RS232 standard. This port transmits at up to 115.2 kbit/s, which is sufficient for terminals and barcode readers tied to the controller. The board plugs into the controller backplane over the aPCI module bus, which supplies power and gives the CPU direct access to the interface registers. Galvanic isolation is implemented between the two X2X links, while the PLC ground is bonded to the If1 port, so external isolators are required when long ground loops are expected.
The RS232 line count is fixed at one, and that port can be accessed online without stopping the task program. With suitable low-capacitance cable, the signal can be maintained over 900 m, making remote terminal placement practical on large machines. The board draws only 1.85 W, which simplifies thermal planning inside compact enclosures. Two master channels are available on the X2X fieldbus; each uses a 4-pin male multipoint connector, and stations can be spaced up to 100 m apart, supporting conveyor or gantry layouts that stretch across a plant. When several interface cards share the same rack, the isolation between X2X paths helps prevent crosstalk and protects upstream electronics during differential faults.
