The 3IF789.9-1 interface module is produced by B & R Automation and belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series. Mounted on the controller backplane, it adds dual-fieldbus communication so the CPU can exchange deterministic data with remote I/O over X2X Link and POWERLINK networks. By bridging the proprietary real-time X2X bus with Ethernet-based POWERLINK, the board supports modular expansion, synchronized motion, and distributed control that are common in factory automation lines.
Its on-board I/O buffer of 20 kB stores cyclic process data so that bursts on the backplane do not disrupt network timing. Port IF1 operates as an X2X Link Master through a 4-pin male multipoint connector and contains an internal terminating resistor, simplifying daisy-chain wiring. The second interface follows POWERLINK V1/V2 and is presented on a shielded RJ45 jack; the physical layer is 100BASE-TX, which lets the module sustain a transfer rate of 100 Mbit/s. During operation, the board draws 2.3 W from the 3.3 V rail and 0.5 W from the 5 V rail, resulting in a total power demand of 2.8 W, which helps limit heat buildup inside dense controller racks. The enclosure is intended for installation inside a closed electrical cabinet.
For longer segments, the X2X line topology can span up to 100 m between the controller and the last node, and the master can address 253 stations without repeaters. The module enforces deterministic timing on every hop through its synchronized scheduler. On the Ethernet side, the POWERLINK channel complies with Type 2 messaging rules, allowing mixed V1 and V2 devices to share the medium while retaining real-time slots. All wiring remains within an IP20-rated enclosure, so standard shielded CAT-5e cables and RJ45 plugs are suitable for electromagnetic compatibility inside machinery enclosures.
