The 3IF789.9 is an interface expansion card produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed beside a CPU module, it extends the controller’s communication scope so that distributed I/O, drives, and safety devices can share deterministic data across factory cells through B & R’s Powerlink and X2X fieldbus structures. This single-slot card occupies an internal back-plane position and serves as a bridge between the central processor and remote network segments used in modern machine control.
The card plugs into an aPCI connector, matching the proprietary back-plane bus used throughout System 2005 racks. It is accepted by the four CPU options CP340, CP360, CP380, CP382, so users can select processor performance without changing the interface hardware. One dedicated transceiver provides one Powerlink interface for real-time Ethernet frames, and this link can act as a manager or controller, meaning the card schedules the network cycle and grants bandwidth to each node. Field wiring for the Powerlink port terminates on the required terminal strip TB704, which snaps to the rack base and maintains shield continuity.
The printed-circuit board is identified by B & R’s product class tag Interface Module, signaling that it adds no local CPU functions and instead extends communications. A separate PHY on the board provides one X2X link interface; in the System 2005 architecture, this deterministic serial bus is used for high-speed I/O slices, and the module’s role is fixed as the network Master, so all downstream stations rely on its timing.
