The 3IF789 interface card is manufactured by B & R Automation as part of the System 2005 Controllers series. Designed for modular PLC backplanes, the card provides network expansion so a controller can coordinate distributed I/O and motion nodes across a plant cell. By combining an internal X2X master channel with a separate POWERLINK port, it bridges real-time fieldbus segments and lets the CPU execute synchronized machine sequences.
The module’s power budget is split between a 3.3 V rail that draws 2.3 W and a 5 V rail that draws 0.5 W. Together, these rails remain within 2.8 W of total dissipation, allowing installation in dense racks without extra cooling. For the first network channel, an onboard 4-pin male multipoint connector carries the X2X signals. Up to 253 downstream stations can be addressed over this link, and a cable length of 100 m is permitted between the master and the most distant node. An internal terminator removes the need for external resistors, and the housing has an IP20 rating, so it must be installed inside a protected enclosure. Galvanic separation is implemented between the If1 and If2 circuits as well as between the PLC core and each interface.
The second channel employs a shielded RJ45 jack and operates at 100 Mbit/s using Ethernet POWERLINK in a full-duplex topology. A local buffer of 20 kB stores telegrams to prevent frame loss during bus arbitration, and automatic collision handling is provided by the 100BASE-T transceiver. The X2X path functions as an X2X Link Master, enabling deterministic sub-millisecond updates while POWERLINK supervises larger cells or higher-level data exchange. Electrical isolation between the two channels prevents common-mode faults from propagating, and the separate interfaces support both deterministic control and standard Ethernet networking.
