B&R Automation’s 3IF787.9-1 belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series and functions as an interface add-on for extending fieldbus connectivity in industrial control systems. Installed beside a CPU module, it handles time-critical communication tasks so that motion axes, safety I/O, and process sensors can share deterministic data over CAN or POWERLINK networks. By moving these bus protocols onto dedicated hardware, the controller can keep its scan time more consistent when several high-traffic devices are active on the machine. This separation of control and communication processing also helps the host CPU maintain predictable response during mixed motion and process workloads.
The first channel exposed by the board is 1 x CAN, and this port can sustain transfer rates up to 500 kbps, which suits mid-range motion or hydraulic loops. Frames are buffered in hardware that supports send and receive queues, allowing simultaneous upstream status reporting and downstream command dispatch. Because the transceiver is electrically isolated, bus faults do not propagate into the backplane ground. For Ethernet motion control, the card provides 1 x ETHERNET Powerlink. Within that segment, the card can assume the network manager or controller role, generating synchronization cycles so distributed drives follow the master clock with microsecond accuracy. The CAN interface is also marked as network-capable, confirming its ability to join segmented system buses.
Cabling for both buses terminates on the detachable block identified as TB704, which simplifies replacement during service. Host compatibility is limited to the CPU models CP340/CP360/CP380/CP382, which provide an internal address space that the card maps for high-speed register access. Physically, the assembly occupies a single slot on the proprietary backplane and is classified by B&R as an aPCI Interface Module. That classification indicates that it relies on the asynchronous Peripheral Component Interconnect used throughout the System 2005 rack to reach memory speeds without external cabling.
