B&R Automation supplies the 3IF787.9 interface card as part of its System 2005 Controllers series. This plug-in communication module equips a controller with separate real-time fieldbus links, allowing centralized PLC logic to coordinate distributed drives, sensors, and safety I/O in an industrial cell. By handling deterministic data exchange on both CAN-based and Ethernet-based networks, the card lets the host CPU execute motion sequences and process interlocks without dedicating additional processor time to low-level bus management.
The board follows the aPCI mechanical standard, so it occupies one controller backplane slot and is addressed by the operating system like any other peripheral. Channel 1 presents a CAN bus interface that transmits and receives arbitration-based telegrams at up to 500 kbit/s; this speed is suited for moderate-bandwidth motion or sensor arrays within a machine frame. Channel 2 uses a full-duplex Ethernet physical layer specified as 100BASE-T (ANSI/IEEE 802.3), giving deterministic POWERLINK cycles on twisted-pair wiring. Overall ingress protection is rated IP20, so the card must be installed inside a grounded cabinet that shields it from dust and accidental contact.
A 4-pin male multipoint connector is fitted for the CAN segment, while POWERLINK wiring terminates on a shielded RJ45 port; each run may extend to the stated maximum segment length of 100 m. The Ethernet channel sustains cyclical telegrams at 100 Mbit/s, and its stack can operate in managing or controlled node mode to match network topology. Galvanic barriers provide isolation between the PLC core and both fieldbus ports, as well as between the two ports themselves, limiting ground-loop currents. Dedicated Tx and Rx object buffers decouple user tasks from bus timing, and total device consumption is limited to 3.0 W, minimizing heat load inside compact controller enclosures.
