The 3IF787 is a communication interface module produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It extends a controller with parallel CAN bus and Ethernet POWERLINK channels so field devices can be attached without extra gateways, which is often required in distributed I/O or motion applications. Within an automation rack, it occupies a single aPCI slot and links the processor backplane to the external networks, giving the control program access to real-time data exchange and deterministic messaging.
This module is housed in an enclosure rated at IP20, meaning it is finger-safe and intended for cabinet installation. The physical format follows the aPCI specification, so it mates directly with the System 2005 passive backplane while drawing only 3.0 W of supply power. On the CAN side, wiring is made through a 4-pin male multipoint connector; the interface supports a maximum bus speed of 500 kbit/s and provides separate transmit and receive object buffers to manage message queues. The CAN channel is galvanically isolated from the POWERLINK side, and additional isolation exists between the field ports and the PLC logic, reducing ground loop risk. Network capability is enabled by default, allowing the controller to join or create CAN segments as soon as the module is configured.
The POWERLINK interface is presented on a shielded RJ45 port; it communicates at 100 Mbit/s and can operate as either a managing node or a controlled node, depending on parameter settings. Cable runs up to 100 m are permissible on Category 5e copper when the network follows the 100BASE-T (ANSI/IEEE 802.3) layer. The Ethernet side is also galvanically isolated, and its link status is monitored by the controller so deterministic cycle times are maintained even during topology changes. Combined with the CAN features, this dual-network card allows a System 2005 CPU to coordinate mixed-protocol devices inside one deterministic control loop.
