The 3IF786.9-1 communication interface module is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Designed for rack installation next to the CPU, it adds one serial and one deterministic Ethernet channel to automate machines and production lines. By combining RS232 diagnostics with real-time POWERLINK networking, the module lets a controller exchange setpoints, status data, and alarms with both legacy devices and newer fieldbus nodes. This arrangement lets the controller keep a simple serial service link active while also exchanging time-sensitive network data with distributed machine nodes, reducing the need for separate communication hardware in the same rack.
The module draws 2.0 W from the backplane's 3.3 V rail and another 0.5 W from the 5 V rail, so total consumption is held to 2.5 W. Port IF1 uses a 9-pin male D-sub connector. It carries the RS232 signal level, works over cables up to 900 m, and reaches a data rate of 115.2 kbit/s. Galvanic isolation is maintained between IF1 and the Ethernet circuitry to prevent ground loops when the serial channel is wired to remote operator panels or diagnostic computers. The isolation, together with the low power demand, allows the board to coexist with sensitive analog I/O cards inside a shared controller rack.
The second port uses a shielded RJ45 connector and the 100BASE-TX physical layer. The link runs at 100 Mbit/s, supports segment lengths up to 100 m, and maintains deterministic timing through the POWERLINK V1/V2 protocol. Auto-MDI/MDIX crossover and autonegotiation are enabled, so the interface adapts automatically to straight-through or crossover wiring and negotiates duplex settings with the peer device. The RS232 and POWERLINK circuits remain galvanically separated to minimize fault propagation between network segments. An enclosure rating of IP20 indicates finger protection and suitability for installation inside a closed control cabinet that is free of conductive dust.
