Product Description:
The 3IF786.9 module is produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It is an expansion card that installs in a controller back-plane and acts as a fieldbus interface between the CPU and decentralized devices. By providing separate RS232 and Ethernet POWERLINK channels, the product allows a System 2005 PLC to exchange serial diagnostic data while simultaneously participating in deterministic real-time machine networks. The part supports electrical isolation between buses and the processor, increasing reliability in multi-node installations.
On the serial side, the card follows the RS232 standard and presents a 9-pin male DSUB connector labeled IF1. The channel reaches a maximum transfer rate of 115.2 kbit/s, sufficient for configuration terminals, barcode scanners, or legacy drives. Electrical isolation is implemented between IF1 and IF2 as well as between IF1 and the PLC backplane, limiting ground loops. The hardware occupies the CompactPCI bus profile defined by its aPCI interface module form factor and maintains one dedicated RS232 port. An internal watchdog supervises data flow and signals errors to the CPU. The housing carries a IP20 protection rating, so the board must be mounted inside a closed control cabinet.
IF2 is the POWERLINK segment. It uses a shielded RJ45 socket wired to the 100BASE-T (ANSI/IEEE 802.3) physical layer and supports deterministic data exchange at 100 Mbit/s. Segment length can reach 100 m when standard category-5 cabling is used, enabling flexible cabinet placement. The single port allows the station to operate as either a managing node or a controlled node, selectable through firmware, and isolation is provided both toward the PLC and the serial interface. Total module consumption remains below 2.5 W, so thermal impact on densely packed racks is minimal and no separate cooling fan is required.
