B & R Automation manufactures the 3IF772.9 communication module for the System 2005 Controllers series. The card extends a controller’s backplane with CAN and RS232 ports so field devices, drives, and programming terminals can exchange data with the PLC. In an automation rack, it acts as an interface card that offloads bus arbitration from the main CPU while remaining within the deterministic timing budget required by industrial sequences.
The CAN portion is managed by the SJA 1000 controller, a stand-alone chip that provides on-chip acceptance filtering and error management. Two network sockets are available through a 2 x 4-pin multipoint connector, and differential signal isolation is provided between the interfaces and the PLC backplane. When segment length permits faster traffic, the controller supports data rates up to 500 kBit/s. If the bus is placed at the end of a trunk, termination can be selected by an external jumper so the resistor can be enabled without rewiring. The card sits in an aPCI insert, which supplies logic power and positions the board for hot-swap removal. For configuration or diagnostics, the RS232 service port is wired to a 9-pin D-sub plug on the front panel.
The serial channel reaches a maximum of 115.2 kbaud, giving sufficient bandwidth for command-line tools or barcode scanners. The interface uses 16-byte FIFO buffers in each direction, allowing burst transfers while the host task executes other interrupts. Line length can extend to 15 m at 19,200 baud, but beyond that point attenuation increases framing errors because no galvanic isolation is present on the RS232 side. Overall power consumption stays below 2.1 W, so additional cooling inside the cabinet is not needed. The available links are one RS232 port and two CAN ports, allowing diagnostic traffic and real-time process data to be separated across different channels.
