B & R Automation manufactures the 3IF772.9 communication module for the System 2005 Controllers series. The card extends a controller’s backplane with CAN and RS232 ports so field devices, drives, and programming terminals can exchange data with the PLC. In an automation rack, it acts as an interface card that offloads bus arbitration from the main CPU while remaining within the deterministic timing budget required by industrial sequences.

The CAN portion is managed by the SJA 1000 controller, a stand-alone chip that provides on-chip acceptance filtering and error management. Two network sockets are available through a 2 x 4-pin multipoint connector, and differential signal isolation is provided between the interfaces and the PLC backplane. When segment length permits faster traffic, the controller supports data rates up to 500 kBit/s. If the bus is placed at the end of a trunk, termination can be selected by an external jumper so the resistor can be enabled without rewiring. The card sits in an aPCI insert, which supplies logic power and positions the board for hot-swap removal.
