3IF761.9 B & R Automation
Wake Industrial LLC is not an authorized distributor of this product.
The B & R Automation 3IF761.9 is part of the System 2005 Controllers series and features both a PROFIBUS DP V0 slave interface and an RS232 serial signal. This controller has a total power draw of 1.35 Watts and an IP20 protection rating. The PROFIBUS interface uses a 9-pin female DSUB connector and supports a maximum distance of 1200 meters with data transfer rates up to 12 Mbit/s.
Internal Product Review
The 3IF761.9 is a B & R Automation System 2005 controller communication module that stands out for low 1.35 W total power draw. PROFIBUS DP V0 slave capability and a 12 Mbit/s max transfer rate support efficient fieldbus integration. IP20 protection and PLC-to-PROFIBUS isolation make the unit an excellent choice for clean cabinet installations.

Product Description:
The 3IF761.9 communication interface module is supplied by B & R Automation as part of the System 2005 Controllers series. Within a controller rack this module adds a Profibus and RS-232 channel, allowing the primary PLC to exchange data with decentralized I/O stations and diagnostic terminals on the plant floor. By embedding bus conversion functions directly on the controller backplane, the unit reduces gateway count and simplifies wiring for distributed automation tasks.
A total consumption of 1.35 W is split between a 5 V rail at 1.2 W and a 3.3 V rail drawing 0.15 W; this light requirement lets the base unit allocate current without extra field supplies. On the fieldbus side the board operates as a PROFIBUS DP V0 slave, moving cyclic data at up to 12 Mbit/s. Cable runs can extend to 1200 m when the lowest data rate and standard RS485 wiring are used. Galvanic separation is provided between the PLC core and the Profibus channel and also between the module’s two internal bus interfaces, limiting ground loops on long links. A 9-pin female DSUB on the front panel handles network connection and termination.
The second communication port follows the RS232 signaling standard and is routed through a 9-pin male DSUB. Data moves at up to 115.2 kbit/s, and cable length may reach 900 m with low-capacitance conductors. Unlike the Profibus channel, there is no isolation barrier between the PLC logic and this serial port, so installers must reference common ground when connecting external terminals. The module’s enclosure carries an IP20 rating, meaning fingers and foreign objects above 12.5 mm are excluded but the unit must reside inside a control cabinet. A dedicated 5 V rail contributes 1.2 W to the total draw, yet this share remains within the System 2005 power budget, allowing multiple communication cards on the same backplane without derating.
