The 3IF686.9 interface module is produced by B&R Automation as part of the System 2005 Controllers series. Designed for machine-level networks, the module provides a dedicated ETHERNET Powerlink connection so a controller such as a CP260 CPU can exchange real-time data with drives, I/O slices, and supervisory PCs. By fitting into a System 2005 backplane, it extends deterministic Ethernet communication without requiring a separate fieldbus card. This arrangement supports coordinated data exchange across automated equipment where predictable timing is important for control tasks and status reporting.
The communication socket is a shielded RJ45 port that helps reduce electromagnetic interference on the cable pair. Electrical signaling follows the 100 Base-T (ANSI/IEEE 802.3) standard, which supports common twisted-pair network wiring used in industrial cabinets. Because the card offers a single network node, its interface count is 1. Data is carried at a sustained 100 MBit/s transfer rate, providing bandwidth suitable for synchronized control traffic. When unrepeated cabling is used, the maximum segment length is 100 m between nodes, which supports typical cabinet-to-machine routing without additional repeaters.
In plant operation, the module tolerates ambient temperatures from 0 °C to +60 °C, allowing installation in typical control cabinets without additional climate control.
