The 3IF681.96 interface module is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. The module provides configurable communication paths so that a controller rack can exchange data with field instruments and higher-level networks. Within an automation cabinet, it occupies a dedicated slot alongside CPU units, translating local sensor information and drive signals into packets that match the expected protocol timing of the control system. By adding this module, the base controller receives Ethernet and serial channels required for machine coordination.
At the hardware level, the board draws 1.65 W from the 5 V backplane, so its thermal contribution inside the enclosure is low. Network traffic enters through a single RJ45 Socket, and the physical medium is Twisted Pair, which minimizes electromagnetic interference on long cable runs. Signaling follows the 10BASE-T standard, guaranteeing compatibility with legacy 10 Mbps segments that are still common in deterministic factory networks. Only one Ethernet line is present, and the 1-port configuration reduces address conflicts and simplifies topology planning.
