The module adds both Ethernet and RS-232 channels, allowing a controller to exchange process data with supervisory networks and legacy serial devices. By combining modern TCP/IP transport with classic asynchronous links, the part serves as a flexible gateway inside industrial automation cells where motion, I/O, and visualization components must share status information in real time. The card installs on the local backplane and draws logic power directly from the host rack, so no separate supply is required.
The module is bus-capable, allowing it to appear as an addressable node on the System 2005 backplane without extra wiring. For Ethernet traffic, a 128 KB Ethernet buffer absorbs burst data and helps prevent packet loss when the CPU is occupied. Frames enter and leave through a 10BASE-T twisted-pair RJ45 socket that supports copper cabling and magnetic isolation, and the interface itself is isolated from the logic side to limit ground loops. Through this port, the unit sustains a maximum Ethernet data rate of 10 Mbit/s. The card has one Ethernet interface, which keeps network connections straightforward when multiple cards are stacked.
Serial duties are handled by a dedicated ST16C650 UART that presents DTR, DSR, RTS, and CTS hardware flow-control lines on a 9-pin D-Sub plug. A single RS-232 channel operates at up to 115.2 kBaud, matching common PLC programming tools and barcode readers. To reduce interrupt overhead, the transmitter and receiver each use a 32-byte FIFO, and an input filter suppresses line noise before characters reach the buffer. Because this port is not isolated, cabinet grounding must be planned carefully. The single serial channel keeps wiring simple when RS-232 communication is needed alongside the Ethernet path.
