The 3IF622.9 is a communication interface module produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed on a controller base unit, the board adds one RS-232 channel and two RS-485/RS-422 channels so the host CPU can exchange serial data with drives, operator panels, and remote I/O. By providing these field connections, the module lets the automation system integrate legacy serial nodes and long-distance multi-drop networks without occupying CPU resources or higher-speed fieldbus slots.

The card fits into the CP260, IF260, IF060 slots of a System 2005 backplane, and it draws a maximum of 1.8 W from the internal 5 V supply, so thermal load on a compact cabinet stays low. At the edge of the board, a 9-pin DSUB plug carries the dedicated RS-232 channel, and its signaling reaches 15 m at 19,200 baud, which is sufficient for point-to-point links inside most machines. Bus wiring for the two differential channels leaves through a 9-pin DSUB socket and must be terminated externally with module 0AC916.9. The module provides 1 × RS232; 2 × RS485/RS422 interfaces for local serial communication and multi-drop field wiring.

Both serial sections are managed by the UART Type ST16C654, enabling interrupt-driven transfers up to 115.2 kBaud on each port. The RS-232 path is not galvanically isolated, whereas the RS-485/422 pair is, which helps maintain signal integrity when the network extends as far as 1200 m or when devices are powered from different potentials. For those differential lines, the backplane offers an auxiliary feed of +5 V / 50 mA to power external repeaters, and the hardware is marked as network-capable so up to 32 nodes can share the same shielded twisted pair. Termination resistors are selected on the end devices only because the module relies on the external resistor pack already noted.
