The 3IF621.9 communication interface card from B&R Automation belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed in a CPU or expansion rack, the card adds CAN and RS485/RS422 channels so discrete sensors, drives, and operator panels can share data with the main CPU. By providing isolated serial buses, the module supports distributed I/O collection, axis coordination, and service diagnostics.
One CAN port is presented on a 4-pin pin block and is managed by an Intel 82527 controller that handles message filtering and error detection in hardware. This segment supports bit rates up to 500 kBit/s, which can be sustained over a 1,000 m trunk when cable and termination rules are followed. The board also brings one serial channel that shares differential drivers for RS485 or RS422, and the system table lists the interfaces as 1 RS485/RS422; 1 CAN. During operation, the board draws only 1.5 W max, allowing it to occupy a passive slot without exceeding the rack power budget. Optional jumpers disable internal pull-ups so the CAN line can use an externally wired terminator, and a selectable T-connector performs the same function for the RS485 segment.
The card is physically keyed for CP260, IF260, IF060 slots, so installation is limited to backplanes that provide the required internal bus handshake. For the serial side, a 9-pin D-Sub socket carries signal, ground, and shield and links to the ST16C650 UART with a 32-byte FIFO to reduce interrupt load. When links are point-to-point or multidrop, the channel can reach 115.2 kBaud across distances up to 1,200 m, provided twisted-pair cable and an external T-connector are applied at the end of the line. Because it is network-capable, the module can be detected by the System 2005 diagnostics and assigned logical addresses without manual coding.
