B&R Automation manufactures the 3IF613.9 interface module for the System 2005 Controllers series. This plug-in card equips a base controller with three independent serial channels so a PLC can link barcode readers, drives, or operator terminals without extra gateway hardware. By adding wired point-to-point links directly inside the rack, the module streamlines data exchange between field devices and the control CPU in compact automation cabinets.
The three channels are based on the ST16C654 UART, which provides a buffer depth of 64 bytes per port to limit processor interrupts during burst transfers. Each channel follows the RS-232 electrical standard and reaches a peak throughput of 115.2 kbit/s, supporting ASCII protocols or simple register polling in older and newer devices. For flow control, IF1 provides full DTR/DSR/RTS/CTS handshaking, while IF2 and IF3 offer RTS/CTS only, matching the needs of printers or intelligent sensors. Word length, parity, and stop bits are selectable between 5 and 8 data bits, with no, even, or odd parity and 1 or 2 stop bits, giving flexibility for legacy devices. Cabling is done through a front-mounted 9-pin D-sub connector, so shielded leads can be secured with standard screw locks. Installation is possible in CP260, IF260, or IF060 slots, allowing placement beside CPU or I/O modules without additional backplane wiring.
The card draws just 1.2 W from the rack’s 5 V supply, an important factor when multiple options are stacked in a confined enclosure. Its board coating and component spacing meet IP20, so the unit requires mounting inside a closed cabinet. Continuous duty is permitted from 0 °C to +60 °C, and it remains functionally intact after transport or shutdown within a range of -25 °C to +70 °C. These thermal limits suit most factory floors and warehouse systems while supporting reliable startup after overnight power cuts. The designated rack slots also help maintain proper airflow so the UART and line drivers stay within their intended operating temperature range during sustained traffic.
