Internal Product Review
The 3IF060.6/PL3 is a B & R Automation System 2005 controller module with single-width construction for main rack installation. Support for Ethernet POWERLINK and PROFIBUS-DP gives this unit strong network flexibility in mixed automation architectures. RS232 and RS485/RS422 connectivity make this module a practical choice for integrating serial devices across legacy and current control systems.

Product Description:
The 3IF060.6/PL3 interface card is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. As an I/O communication module, it occupies one slot in a main rack and allows the base controller to exchange data with several field networks used in industrial automation. By adding this card, a System 2005 CPU can coordinate motion, process, and safety segments through standardized serial and fieldbus channels without relying on external gateways. This arrangement keeps communication functions inside the controller platform and reduces the need for separate interface hardware in the cabinet.
Its housing is classified as Single-width, so it takes minimal panel space and leaves adjacent rack positions free for other functions. Internally, the carrier provides 1 insert slot that accepts a removable communication plug. The card draws only 1 W from the 5 V backplane, keeping the overall rack heat load low when multiple modules are installed. It supports up to 7 compatible inserts, allowing the same base card to be adapted for several network types without changing the rack layout. When a CAN insert is fitted, the module provides CAN support with standard arbitration and signaling up to 1 Mbit/s.
The card can be installed only on the main rack, where it links the controller to additional networks without adding much to the backplane heat load. With a different insert, it can activate Ethernet Powerlink for deterministic peer-to-peer traffic, or switch to Profibus-DP for cyclic master-slave exchanges with remote I/O. Legacy machinery is supported through RS232 point-to-point connections, while multidrop serial wiring can be handled through RS485/RS422. This flexibility allows the same controller family to connect to distributed I/O, drives, sensors, and operator panels by using the insert that matches the machine layout.
