The 3IF050.6 communication module is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It functions as an expansion card that links the PLC back-plane to serial field devices used throughout an automation cell. By supplying electrically isolated channels, the board safeguards the controller logic while permitting simultaneous data exchange over multiple networks. Typical uses include machine tools, packaging lines, and process skids where the CPU must relay commands or collect diagnostics from drives, operator panels, scanners, or remote I/O units that rely on standard serial protocols.
The module provides a dual-ported RAM area of 576 bytes, allowing the RISC coprocessor to buffer telegrams without interrupting the main task cycle. Hardware on the card supports 3 physical interfaces that can be enabled individually through jumper settings. For legacy instruments, the RS-232 path reaches a maximum speed of 64 kBaud using a 9-pin D-Sub plug, while the differential RS-485/RS-422 path can drive multidrop lines at 347 kBaud through a matching 9-pin socket.
