It plugs into a System 2005 rack and manages fieldbus traffic between the main CPU and distributed devices. By offloading cyclic data exchange from the processor, the unit improves scan consistency and simplifies network expansion in packaging lines, conveyor cells, and assembly workstations.
The configuration interface is accessed through a service socket that follows the RS232 electrical standard; this channel operates at a fixed 9.6 kbit/s and lacks galvanic isolation, which is acceptable for short in-cabinet links. For plant-wide communication, the module offers a fieldbus port based on RS485; telegrams on this line can reach up to 12 Mbit/s and the node table can accommodate as many as 125 slaves before performance drops. Input buffers accept 3.5 KB of process variables per scan, while an identical area is reserved for output words that hold actuator commands.
