Product Description:
The 3EX450.66-1 is a communication module developed by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed on the CPU backplane, the board serves as a Profibus DP network master so the controller can exchange cyclic data with distributed I/O, drives, and HMI stations in an industrial cell. Its purpose is to offload the host CPU from bus arbitration tasks while providing deterministic field-level messaging essential for coordinated motion and process control.
For local maintenance, the module provides a diagnostic subsystem. An asynchronous channel is implemented through an RS232 port that is presented on a front-mounted 9-pin D-Sub connector and communicates at 9600 baud. Incoming and outgoing telegram activity is indicated by the RxD and TxD LEDs, and isolation is not provided on this channel, so the service PC shares signal common with the controller. Internally, a dual-port RAM architecture buffers field data; the total DPR memory is 8 KB, of which the DPR control area occupies 1 KB for status words and command flags. This memory layout lets the CPU and the bus interface processor access their respective pages without collisions, supporting rapid parameter downloads and fault reporting.
On the network side, Profibus signals are routed through a second 9-pin D-Sub that uses differential drivers complying with RS485 levels. Acting as a Profibus DP Master, the card can coordinate up to 125 slave stations while exchanging as much as 3.5 KB of input data and 3.5 KB of output data per communication cycle. Galvanic isolation is present between the fieldbus and the internal logic to protect the controller from ground loops. The module consumes only 5.5 W from the system power rail and operates across an ambient range of 0 to +55 °C, allowing installation in standard control cabinets without additional cooling.
