The 3EX150.60-1 is a fieldbus communication module manufactured by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Mounted in the main rack of the PLC, it establishes a serial backbone so distributed I/O stations can be polled or written from the central CPU without separate point-to-point wiring for every signal. In industrial automation cells, this arrangement reduces cable density, supports orderly cabinet layouts, and keeps cyclic data exchange aligned with the response needs of coordinated motion and process control tasks. It is used where a central controller must exchange status and command data with multiple field devices over one shared communication path.
The unit uses a master-slave arbitration method to organize telegram flow on the network, and all messages pass through the RS485 differential interface presented by the card. Its topology is a physical bus, so devices are daisy-chained rather than arranged in star or ring layouts. Because line termination is external, resistors are placed only at the ends of a segment instead of at every node. Selectable data rates of 100 kbit/s, 181 kbit/s, 500 kbit/s, 1 Mbit/s, or 2 Mbit/s let the system balance update speed with cable length, and even at the highest rate the module draws no more than 5.5 W. This allows the same hardware to support shorter high-speed links as well as longer segments that require a lower baud rate.
Network cabling connects through a 9-pin D-Sub female socket, and the link requires shielded twisted-pair cable to maintain signal quality at higher speeds. Without a repeater, a single segment can support up to 31 slaves, while larger installations can include as many as 8 remote masters. The card is intended for the main rack only and is not designed for expansion-rack installation, which helps avoid address conflicts on secondary backplanes and keeps the communication path tied to the primary controller slot. That layout keeps the network structure predictable when the controller coordinates machine starts, stops, and mode changes across several connected stations.
