The 3EX150.60 module is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It functions as a remote I/O master, letting a central CPU collect field signals from distributed stations over a dedicated expansion bus. Using the master-slave principle, the device schedules data exchanges so actuators and sensors can be addressed deterministically. This helps the controller keep distributed inputs and outputs synchronized during normal machine operation.

Communication parameters show how the unit fits into a field network. The default transmission speed is 500 kBaud and is set at the factory, while signaling runs over a RS485 serial interface that is galvanically separated from logic circuits; this isolation helps prevent ground loops between panels. Wiring terminates on a 9-pin DSUB socket and follows a shielded twisted-pair physical bus with direct connections between nodes. Without repeaters, the segment can extend to 1,200 m and can host up to 31 slave stations per master. Termination resistors are added externally at both ends to match line impedance, and the simple bus layout keeps the wiring easy to follow.

Higher-performance layouts are supported by a peak transfer capacity of 2 MBit/s, which is useful when several masters share the medium. For auxiliary electronics such as external signal conditioners, the module offers an isolated supply of 5 V / 200 mA; this rail is derived internally yet remains separated from the communication pair. Because that auxiliary rail is isolated, small interface devices can be powered without coupling their reference potential directly into the bus. Overall energy draw stays modest at 5.5 W, so cabinet thermal load remains low even under continuous polling.
