B & R Automation manufactures the 3DO650.6, a relay output module belonging to the System 2005 Controllers series. The unit converts low-level control signals from the host PLC into isolated relay closures that actuate external loads in industrial automation cells. By providing multiple normally-open contacts, it simplifies wiring between the controller back-plane and field devices such as lamps, solenoids, or contactors.

The module accepts a nominal field supply of 120 VAC for traditional line-powered loads and a logic supply of 24 VDC for its internal coil drivers; the latter only draws 3.3 W, minimizing cabinet heat. Sixteen independent outputs are arranged in four groups, each separated by 250 VAC of group isolation so mixed-voltage circuits can share the same card without cross-coupling. Relay contacts are specified as normally open, giving a fail-safe open circuit when power is removed. Each channel can switch up to 300 VA of apparent power or, when the load is purely resistive, 90 W. The contact set should not be toggled faster than 10 Hz, a limit that protects the mechanical relay from excessive wear. Additional isolation of 144 VAC is provided between the output commons and the PLC backplane to protect sensitive logic electronics.

Current handling aligns with the card’s relay rating: the aggregate of all groups must stay below 32.0 A, while any single channel is limited to 2.0 A. Reliable switching of small-signal circuits is also possible because the contacts close down to 0.1 mA at 0.1 VDC, reducing the need for auxiliary low-level relays. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, so it fits unexposed, ventilated cabinets and relies on the host rack for additional shielding. Four output groups allow power distribution to be fused or disconnected independently, and the specified isolation values help prevent ground loops when mixing control and mains circuits.
