B & R Automation's 3DO487.6 output module belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series and serves as a discrete interface between a PLC backplane and field actuators. It converts controller commands into switching signals for common machine loads, letting the control system add compact high-side drivers to a distributed I/O node without separate relay boards. The module is intended for general industrial automation where individual solenoids, lamps, or contactor coils must be energized under program control.
The module offers 16 digital outputs that share a sourcing topology, and each channel presents a 24 VDC high-side switch realized with a Transistor driver. Because the circuit uses a Source topology, actuators receive supply potential from the slice and return on common ground. A per-channel nominal load of 2.0 A is permitted, and power loss stays at 4.4 W when the external 24 V rail is used. Channel-to-PLC isolation blocks noise, while group-to-group isolation confines faults to one section. Reverse-polarity protection guards the electronics, and integrated inductive load suppression clips flyback from coils. External sensor power also passes through the terminal so transducers can share the system voltage without taxing the backplane.
The outputs are organized into two groups, each able to supply 12.0 A of current, and together they deliver up to 24.0 A to connected loads. Logic and diagnostic circuitry draw only 1.2 W from the internal 5 V rail, leaving most of the thermal budget for user devices. The housing is rated IP20, so the slice must be mounted inside a control cabinet that provides additional enclosure protection. Independent sourcing of sensor voltage keeps measurement circuits electrically separate from output drivers. Built-in current sharing within each group helps ensure that simultaneous energization of mixed inductive and resistive loads stays within the stated limits.
