The 3DO486.6 digital output module is produced by B & R Automation within the System 2005 Controllers series. Serving as a field-side actuator interface, it accepts control signals from the CPU and energizes devices on an assembly line. The card offers 32 high-side switching channels that transform logic-level commands into 24 V paths for valves, contactors, or status lamps.

Each channel can deliver a continuous current of 0.5 A, a limit that prevents overheating of the FET drivers. The module sources a nominal output of 24 VDC, so loads designed for standard 24-volt circuits connect directly. When a channel is disabled, an off-state leakage of <120 µA avoids unintended coil pull-in. Resistive loads may be toggled at up to 100 Hz, a frequency adequate for moderate pulse-width tasks. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, which makes live parts finger-safe but requires cabinet mounting. Two groups of 16 outputs provide separate supply rails, and group-to-group isolation simplifies troubleshooting. An FET positive-switching design reduces voltage drop, reverse-polarity protection shields the field connector, and thermal cutoff handles overcurrent events without external fuses.

At power-up, the board draws 4.4 W from the external 24 V source and 1.2 W from the internal 5 V backplane, keeping cabinet heat low. During faults, a channel can supply a peak of <13 A before the integrated cutoff disconnects the load. Inductive energy is suppressed to 50 VDC, protecting adjacent electronics from flyback spikes. Even at rated load, the residual drop remains below 200 mV @ 0.5 A, conserving power and minimizing self-heating. With 32 outputs, short-circuit monitoring, and thermal diagnostics, the module condenses high-side switching into a compact slice suitable for distributed machine control.
