The 3DO480.6 digital output module is produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It plugs into the backplane of a base controller to add sourcing outputs for actuators such as contactors, coils, and status lamps. The module converts logic-level commands from the CPU into field-side power, isolating process wiring from internal electronics and supporting deterministic control of 24-volt devices.
Field power is supplied at 24 VDC, so the wiring can share the common 24-volt supply used in many control cabinets. The board offers 16 discrete outputs arranged in two groups, and each channel uses a transistor source circuit that permits rapid switching without the mechanical wear seen in electromechanical relays. Under continuous load, a channel may conduct 2.0 A, which accommodates direct energizing of many pneumatic valve coils. The front housing carries an IP20 rating, indicating finger-safe terminals, but the module still requires enclosure mounting when airborne oil, dust, or moisture are present. Group-to-group and group-to-PLC isolation barriers protect the CPU from external transients, and an external sensor supply decouples field reference potentials.
