B&R Automation manufactures the 3DO479.6 digital output module for the System 2005 Controllers series. The board mounts on the system backplane and provides solid-state switching so PLC logic can control external loads without mechanical relays. By converting low-level control signals into 24 V sourcing outputs, it serves as the link between the controller CPU and field devices such as valves, lamps, and other actuators used in packaging, material handling, and general machine automation. Because the outputs are solid state, the module is suited for applications that need repeatable switching without relay contact wear.
The module operates from a nominal bus voltage of 24 VDC, drawing 1.0 W from the 5 V logic rail while the output section uses 4.0 W from the external 24 V supply. It provides 16 transistor output channels arranged in two electrically separated groups, and each channel can source up to 0.5 A of continuous load current. A typical turn-on delay of 5 µs and a maximum switching frequency of 500 Hz support fast response with compatible field devices. When a transistor is off, leakage current is limited to 0.3 mA, which helps prevent unintended energizing of connected loads. The module uses transistor outputs in a sourcing configuration, so loads return to the common negative rail. The separated groups can also be wired to different machine sections when the application layout requires it.
For cabinet installation, the card carries an IP20 rating, which provides finger-safe protection and requires mounting inside an enclosure. The two output groups each contain eight channels and share a maximum group current of 4 A, while the module is limited to 8 A total. This arrangement supports balanced load distribution across separate machine zones and orderly wiring inside the control cabinet. Because the groups are isolated from each other, a fault on one group is less likely to affect the other group. Internal protection monitors thermal load and switches channels off if per-output or total current limits are exceeded. This helps protect the 24 V supply and connected wiring during overload conditions.
