The B & R Automation's 3DM486.6/Z is a discrete I/O module in the System 2005 Controllers series. The unit combines sixteen input channels and sixteen output channels on a single DIN-rail device, allowing a controller to collect field signals and drive actuators without separate cards. Within an automation cell, it bridges sensors, limit switches, contactors, and low-power solenoids to the CPU so machine logic in the series PLC processor can interact with the plant at 24 VDC levels. Combining both signal directions in one housing also helps simplify panel layout where space is limited.

The module accepts an input supply of 24 VDC, and the inputs use IEC 61131 Type 1 circuitry with 6 kΩ resistance so leakage currents are less likely to cause false triggering. Each signal passes through the input path quickly, which helps keep sequence timing predictable during fast machine cycles. Sixteen discrete input terminals are available, with 16 digital inputs configurable for sink or source wiring through a jumper. The corresponding 16 digital outputs are protected by a clamp circuit, and the 50 VDC braking voltage absorbs inductive energy from relays and brake coils. The IP20 enclosure is intended for installation inside a closed control cabinet where finger protection is sufficient.

Outputs switch the field load at 24 VDC, using FET positive switching transistors that deliver 0.5 A per channel up to a total output current of 8.0 A. Resistive circuits may be toggled at 100 Hz without thermal derating, while the selectable sink or source input arrangement remains unchanged. External logic draws 2.2 W from the cabinet's auxiliary 24 V rail, and internal signal processing uses 1.2 W from an onboard 5 V regulator. A deterministic scan is supported by an 1 ms input delay, which helps the controller react to changing field states in a consistent manner. Separating field power from internal logic power helps the module maintain stable operation while outputs switch connected loads.
