B & R Automation manufactures the 3DM476.6 as an I/O slice for the System 2005 Controllers series. The module combines discrete sensing and actuation so a CPU node can map field devices directly onto its process image. Designed for 24-volt control cabinets, it contributes sixteen input channels and sixteen output channels to an industrial automation rack, allowing a compact machine controller to monitor switches, proximity sensors, lamps, and relay coils without external interface boards.

The input side is built with 16 channels arranged in four groups, and each group uses a Sink/Source topology so either positive-switching or negative-switching devices can be wired. The nominal input level is 24 VDC / 24 VAC, and every transition is debounced by an internal comparator that adds only 1 ms of delay. Channel-to-PLC isolation is implemented with optocouplers, preventing ground loops between field wiring and logic power. The output circuitry uses transistors and follows a sourcing scheme that can deliver up to 0.4 A per channel through high-side switches. The outputs share a common supply rail and can drive contactors or indicator loads rated for 24 VDC.

Total sourcing capability reaches 4.8 A, limited evenly by thermal shutdown on each group. Cabinet ingress protection is rated at IP20, so the board requires installation inside a closed panel. External 24-volt auxiliaries feed sensors through a fused line that draws 2.0 W, while the logic and driver stages draw 2.5 W internally from the backplane bus. The sensor power supply is external, the output circuit is protected against short circuits, and four discrete input groups simplify commoning. Onboard status LEDs display signal activity for setup and diagnostics without additional tools.
